News Summary

Birmingham is shaken by a series of tragic incidents, including multiple homicides and a young boy’s death due to a fleeing driver. The community is mourning and seeking justice as police investigate these heartbreaking events, emphasizing the urgent need for collective action against violence.

Birmingham Faces Tragic Series of Incidents

In a devastating turn of events, the city of Birmingham is grappling with a series of tragic incidents that have sent shockwaves through the community. Just recently, police have been busy investigating a concerning string of homicides and accidents that have left families mourning and calling for justice.

Night of Investigation at Bush Hills Quickstop

On a Saturday evening, Birmingham Police were summoned to the Bush Hills Quickstop around 7 p.m. While details remain limited, authorities have classified it as a developing story that they are actively working on. The community is nervously waiting for more information, hoping for answers regarding incidents that are becoming all too familiar.

The Tragic Loss of Demarco Cortez Thomas

Earlier, on Friday, June 7, the scene was troubling as police were called to the 400 block of 9th Street West at approximately 3:30 p.m. after reports of shots fired and a vehicle accident surfaced. Upon arrival, officers discovered a damaged black SUV and found Demarco Cortez Thomas, a 35-year-old man commonly known as Geremy Demarco Sistrunk, inside the vehicle with a gunshot wound. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene by the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service crews.

As of now, no one has been taken into custody regarding this investigation, leaving loved ones and friends without closure. Authorities have urged anyone who might hold any snippets of information related to this case to step forward and contact Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777, with the hope of uncovering leads that might bring justice.

Tragedy Strikes a Young Boy

Braylen Hardy, just 13 years old, lost his life after being struck by a driver fleeing a shooting scene on the same Saturday night. This tragedy unfolded after multiple shots were fired in the 2400 block of Avenue D. Braylen, innocently sitting on his ATV in the 2800 block of Avenue E, became a victim of this chaos and was later pronounced dead at Children’s Hospital on Tuesday.

Braylen’s family is filled with grief as they demand justice for their beloved son. In his honor, they plan to hold a balloon release at the crash site, making sure his memory is cherished. Described as a diligent student, an athlete, and a compassionate individual who always lent a hand to others, Braylen’s untimely death is a profound loss to the family and his community.

To help cover the expenses for his funeral, the family has set up a GoFundMe account, rallying support from friends and the local community.

Unresolved Investigation and Community Involvement

The driver responsible for Braylen’s accident attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended. However, police have released this individual and, up until now, haven’t given interviews regarding the ongoing investigation. Residents hope for clarity as they witness the toll that violence has taken on their neighborhood.

Adding to the overarching concern, the city has seen reports of additional gunfire, including an incident on March 16 in the 1100 block of Fourth Avenue West. That unfortunate event left Keenetheen Royall, a 24-year-old resident of Birmingham, dead after sustaining gunshot wounds at the scene. With 15 to 20 rounds detected by a gunfire detection system, this incident raises more questions than answers, and no arrests have been made yet.

All of these tragic occurrences have contributed to Birmingham’s rising homicide count, which stands at a staggering 25 for the year, with 32 overall in Jefferson County. The community is being encouraged to assist police investigations by reporting any information, as residents band together to find solutions and bring peace back to their city.

As Birmingham copes with this surge of violence, the hope for safety and peace hangs in the balance. The community and its leaders are actively advocating for changes that ensure such tragedies don’t repeat themselves, emphasizing the need for collective effort in reclaiming their streets.
