Birmingham – The Birmingham Police Department conducted a significant enforcement operation aimed at improving city safety, which led to the arrest of 79 individuals between April 21 and April 27, 2025. This initiative was part of a broader effort by the Special Operations Bureau to combat crime and enhance community security.

Of the 79 arrests made, 51 were felony arrests and 28 were misdemeanors. Officers also executed 193 traffic stops during this time, resulting in the issuance of 220 citations, with 66 specifically for speeding. This crackdown on traffic and illegal activities also led to the seizure of 17 firearms, of which four were reported stolen, and one had been altered. In addition to impounding 14 vehicles, law enforcement recovered one stolen vehicle during this operation.

Significant quantities of narcotics were also confiscated in the enforcement sweep. Overall, the drugs seized included 92.91 grams of cocaine, 122 grams of methamphetamine, and 3,645.7 grams of marijuana. Other drugs recovered during this operation included Adderall, Alprazolam, crack cocaine, ecstasy, fentanyl, hydrocodone, MDMA, mushrooms, oxycodone, Percocet, synthetic marijuana, THC edibles, THC wax, THC vape pens, and Xanax. Law enforcement also seized $23,209 in currency throughout the operation, demonstrating the extensive efforts to tackle drug-related crime in the city.

In addition to the enforcement activity, the Birmingham community is mourning the loss of Officer Marlon Moore, who tragically died in a motorcycle crash on April 28, 2025. The accident occurred at approximately 5:03 a.m. on Interstate 59 near First Avenue North. At the time of the crash, Officer Moore was off duty but was serving as a patrol officer for the East Precinct. A U.S. Marine veteran, Officer Moore joined the Birmingham Police Department in July 2019 and graduated from the police academy in December 2019.

The circumstances surrounding the motorcycle crash are currently under investigation. Following the tragic event, the police department has implemented support services for officers and staff who are grappling with the loss of their colleague. Police Chief Michael Pickett conveyed his sorrow regarding Officer Moore’s untimely death and recognized his dedication and service to the community.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin also extended his condolences, sharing his grief over Officer Moore’s passing on social media. The loss has resonated deeply within the department and throughout the community, emphasizing the risks that law enforcement officers face while serving and protecting the public.

In the wake of the motorcycle accident, northbound lanes of I-59 were closed for several hours, creating major traffic disruptions as authorities worked to clear the scene. The investigation into the details surrounding the crash continues as law enforcement seeks to determine the factors that contributed to the tragic incident.
