New Community-Inspiring Mural Unveiled in Birmingham, Alabama

In a bold and colorful ode to community and heritage, a striking new mural proudly adorns the side of the Citizen’s Express Pharmacy building in Birmingham, Alabama. Located directly opposite the historic A.G. Gaston Motel on 1513 5th Avenue North, the mural painted by Langston Allston, injects a vibrant life force into the cityscape.

Promoting Unity and Legacy

The owner of the pharmacy Delmous Vance expressed his intentions for the mural, stating, “The mural shows the community embracing each other and coming together as one. As the gateway to the 4th Avenue Business District, it is an iconic place to put it.” Vance’s father bought the pharmacy from A.G. Gaston in 1967 and relocated it to its current position in the 1980s. The pharmacy was the first collaborative venture Gaston initiated with Walgreen’s, establishing the first Black-owned Walgreens in Birmingham.

Historical Significance and Appreciation

The mural’s location carries a great historical weight, as the A.G. Gaston Motel was the accommodation choice for Dr. King during his time in Birmingham and a significant planning hub for momentous advancements in the civil rights movement. Langston Allston, the New Orleans-based muralist, extended his gratitude to the Birmingham community in an Instagram post for their support despite the scorching weather condition. He also acknowledged the importance of the site, “I’m still wrapping my head around what it means for my artwork to be placed here, and the significance of completing it on Juneteenth.”

A Catalyst for District Revitalization

This compelling artwork stands as a noteworthy addition to Birmingham’s Historic 4th Avenue Business District. It is believed that the mural will spark business development and tourism in the area. Vance added, “We’ve got a lot of plans for the area and hope we can get a lot done. As long as the community works together and get on the same page, we can do a lot more in this district.”

The mural serves as not only a reminder of the city’s vibrant history but also a beacon of hope for a collaborative and inclusive community. The rendering of such a symbol, delicately intertwined with its rich historical context, invigorates the public space and creates an atmosphere of unity that embraces the heart of Birmingham.

In a time when fostering community engagement becomes more crucial than ever, this mural stands as a testament to the resilience, strength, and unity of the local community. Visitors are welcome to witness this stunning piece of community artwork at 1513 5th Avenue North, Birmingham, Alabama 35203.
