Robbery Suspect Apprehended After Firing Shot During Police Chase in Birmingham

Robbery in Progress

On Saturday, Birmingham police were swiftly on the scene of a reported robbery in the 4600 block of 13th Avenue North. At around 12:45 p.m., South Precinct officers learned that an adult male had been mugged, with several belongings taken from him, and that a male suspect was fleeing the scene on foot.

Foot Chase and Gunnery

Officers initiated a foot chase in an attempt to apprehend the suspect. During the pursuit, they heard a gunshot and saw a bystander fall to the ground. Initially, it was thought that the bystander had been hit by the gunshot, but upon closer inspection, officers confirmed that no injuries had occurred.

Suspect in Custody

The subject of the chase was soon apprehended and taken into custody. He is currently undergoing questioning at the police headquarters. Officer Truman Fitzgerald stated that police do not believe the suspect fired the shot targeting them.

Lingering Concerns

Though relief sweeps the community that no one was injured during this incident, concerns remain heightened due to the gun shot being fired during broad daylight. Citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant and to always promptly report suspicious activities to the authorities.

Call for Community Cooperation

The local enforcement unit has called upon the residents of Birmingham to join forces with them by staying aware of their surroundings and demonstrating a keen sense of community. This concerted effort can help keep the city safe and strengthen the relations between the public and the police.

Taking Steps towards a Safer City

Safety measures are continually being reinforced, with police presence being amped up in residential neighborhoods. Meanwhile, the suspect involved in this incident is expected to face a thorough investigation and, potentially, serious charges. The swift response and resolution of this situation demonstrates the commitment of Birmingham police to ensuring public safety.
