Birmingham, Ala. – In response to recent tragic incidents across the country, Birmingham City Schools are enhancing their safety measures with the introduction of a new panic button system for teachers. Panic Alert Button Rollout
Starting this academic year, teachers will be equipped with panic buttons that, when activated, immediately alert first responders about emergencies taking place within the school. Dr. Sullivan explained that the buttons, which are expected to cost around $400,000, are intended to allow for quicker response times during critical situations.
When pressed, the panic buttons transmit specific information regarding the location of the emergency and the person activating it. This feature was highlighted following recent school tragedies, including the unfortunate shooting in Georgia that claimed the lives of four individuals. Dr. Sullivan noted that this type of alert system played a crucial role in informing authorities about the location of the shooter during that incident.
Learning from the Past
Dr. Sullivan pointed out that the introduction of this panic alert system is a direct response to the increasing frequency and severity of school safety threats. He mentioned that use of similar alert methods has notably increased since the 2018 Parkland High School shooting in Florida. “In light of recent events, I noticed that one of the things that alerted authorities to the location of the shooter in Georgia was a teacher having one of those panic buttons,” he said. “Our board approved the implementation of these buttons this summer, and we’re going to start rolling them out in our high schools, eventually expanding to our middle and elementary schools.”
