Dr. Robert Cannon, an associate professor and surgical director of the liver transplant program, emphasized that this milestone could not have been reached without the commitment of many individuals at UAB over the years, as well as the generosity of countless donors and families. “This milestone would not have been possible without the dedication of countless individuals at UAB over four decades, thousands of donors and families who have given selflessly that others may live, and the bravery of patients facing their time of greatest need,” said Dr. Cannon.
History of the Program
The journey of liver transplantation at UAB dates back to 1968 when the program completed its very first organ transplant. Since then, the UAB Comprehensive Transplant Institute has been at the forefront of vital research, innovative techniques, and the development of new medicines. Patients from across the United States—specifically from 44 states—have chosen UAB for their organ transplant needs, marking its influence on a national scale.
Brendan McGuire, the medical director of liver transplantation remarked, “We are able to achieve this milestone because of the incredible team of health care professionals at UAB and the generosity of the donor families who time and time again give the gift of life.” This achievement reflects a collaborative effort among many specialized teams, including hepatologists, surgeons, and transplant-trained nursing staff.
