Birmingham Launches Modified Apprenticeship Program for Low-Income Residents
Birmingham, AL – The Housing Authority of the Birmingham District (HABD) has taken an important step towards assisting local residents with its new Modified Apprenticeship Program. This initiative aims to connect individuals facing low income with valuable job opportunities, providing practical training and support. Announced recently, the program will kick off by accepting 40 participants in its first cohort.
Program Overview
Over the course of six months, participants will engage in on-the-job training and complete personal development courses designed to enhance their employability. Each participant will earn $15 an hour for guaranteed work of at least 20 hours per week. The program involves partnerships with local businesses in various fields such as maintenance and landscaping, aimed at helping participants build a robust skill set.
According to Larry Williams, Chief Housing and Programs Officer at HABD, one of the primary goals of this program is to address the common barriers that low-income individuals face when entering the job market. “What’s keeping you from the program is what we want to know. What barriers are in place?” Williams stated. “Is it transportation? Is it child care? If we can help build wrap-around services to get you into the program, that’s what we’ll do.”
Personal Development Focus
Alongside job training, the program includes personal development courses focusing on financial literacy and leadership skills. Williams emphasized the importance of preparedness for long-term employment. “In order to achieve a full-time job, you first have to be dependable. Secondly, you have to have a good attitude. But more importantly, you have to have a skill set to bring to the table,” he explained. The program aspires to help participants explore a variety of career options.
Williams stated that the apprenticeship model has already seen success in the Washington D.C. area, where it reportedly placed around 80% of participants into local jobs. “When they see the benefit of it and they graduate, it’s life-changing for them sometimes,” he shared, providing hope for better futures for those involved.
Application Process
The HABD will start accepting applications for the Modified Apprenticeship Program on Thursday, October 10th, during its 2024 Employment and Community Resource Fair. This fair will take place from 11 AM to 2 PM at Bill Harris Arena, located at 2337 Bessemer Rd, Birmingham, AL 35208. Community members interested in the program can also apply through the HABD website starting on the same date. This outreach event, along with the program itself, represents a significant effort towards economic empowerment within the Birmingham area.
