Bridging the Divide: Why Birmingham and Shelby County Need Each Other

When you bring up Birmingham, you might expect some mixed reactions. It seems like Birmingham is a love-it-or-hate-it kind of place. Residents living in nearby Shelby County often voice their opinions about Birmingham in a less-than-flattering way, suggesting crime stats, political turmoil, and a supposed population decline paint a bleak picture. But hold on a minute! While Shelby County folks might find comfort in their suburban paradise, it’s important to recognize that tearing down Birmingham doesn’t really help anyone, especially when it comes to economic stability.

The Metro Connection

Let’s dive into why Shelby County is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). This includes seven counties: Bibb, Blount, Chilton, Jefferson, St. Clair, Shelby, and Walker. The “Metro” label doesn’t just come from a map—it’s a lovingly defined region built around economic ties. The definition states that an MSA is made up of “broad labor-market areas” that consist of central counties with urban areas boasting populations of over 50,000.

But that’s not all! According to the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham, for a county to be included in the MSA, at least 25% of its workforce needs to be commuting into the Birmingham-Hoover MSA. That’s the reason why Walker County keeps fluctuating in and out—it’s always teetering on that percentage.

Economics at Play

Now, here’s the kicker: there are around 48,000 Shelby County workers commuting into Jefferson County. That’s about 38% of Shelby County’s workforce—can you believe it?

So, what does that mean if Jefferson County were to face economic struggles? Well, it’s pretty clear: a staggering 38% of Shelby County employees could potentially find themselves out of a job. Yes, you heard that right! With the recent annual report from the Alabama Department of Commerce shining a light on stagnating job growth and lackluster company recruitment in the Birmingham-Hoover Metro, you may begin to see why supportive dialogue between these areas is crucial. Disparaging comments about Birmingham can actually hurt Shelby County’s economic prospects at the end of the day.

A Better Birmingham Equals a Better Shelby County

It’s essential to recognize that the health of Birmingham directly influences the prosperity of Shelby County. Why? Well, a strong Birmingham provides plenty of amenities and job opportunities, making it an attractive place for all – suburban folks included. Imagine living right next to a city that boasts UAB, the vibrant Birmingham airport, an art museum, a zoo, and an arena for major events! Who wouldn’t want all that excitement right next door?

Instead of pitching Shelby County against Birmingham, how about we shift gears and create a more supportive atmosphere? When Birmingham thrives, everyone benefits. A flourishing urban core means enhanced public services and economic rejuvenation for surrounding suburbs. We can all work towards a brighter future when we’re united, rather than divided.

Join the Dialogue

Everyone living in this vibrant region should start to think about how supporting Birmingham isn’t just about loving one city over another; it’s about building a sustainable and prosperous future for all residents in the greater Birmingham area. So let’s put away the negative comments and roll up our sleeves to work on fostering connections that can lead to comprehensive growth and unity!

David Sher, founder of the Comeback Town newsletter, emphasizes the importance of unity in this venture. He invites everyone, no matter their neighborhood, to engage in conversations that can strengthen our metropolitan community. After all, it’s not just about Shelby County or Birmingham—it’s about creating a thriving region for everyone involved.

Maybe it’s time we start finding common ground! After all, a thriving Birmingham means a better Shelby County, and that, folks, is something truly worth celebrating.
