Birmingham Welcomes New Affordable Housing Facility: Southtown Family

Birmingham, AL – A much-anticipated addition to the community is set to open its doors this month as the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District (HABD) prepares for the ribbon cutting of the Southtown Family at Edgehill on Friday, September 20, 2024, at 10 a.m.

A Community Transformation

This new residential property represents a significant investment in the city, with construction totaling $17 million. Groundbreaking for this facility took place in April 2023, marking the beginning of a project that promises to enrich the local community with quality housing options.

The Southtown Family building features 60 residential units, available in one, two, and three-bedroom configurations. Each apartment is equipped with modern major appliances, catering to the needs of future residents. Dontrelle Young Foster, President and CEO of HABD, stated, “This is an exciting time to embark on expanding communities and opportunities for our residents.” He emphasized the significance of this project as a testament to HABD’s commitment to providing affordable housing options in Birmingham.

Designed for Modern Living

The new facility comes with several amenities designed to enhance the quality of life for its residents. These include a business center, community rooms, and charging stations for electric vehicles. Such features not only promote modern living but also aim to encourage community engagement among residents.

A Step Towards Change

The Southtown Family facility is a part of a larger redevelopment project in the area, partnering with various organizations, including BREC Development, Hollyhand Companies, Southside Development Corporation, and SPM. Such collaborations illustrate a community-focused approach to urban development, aiming to cater to the needs of Birmingham’s residents.

Historical Context

The site of the new facility was once home to the original Southtown Court, a public housing development established in the 1940s. With this new project, Birmingham takes a step forward, offering updated and improved living conditions for its residents and supporting a vision of revitalization and growth.

Event Details

The ribbon cutting ceremony is open to the public and will take place at the intersection of 9th Avenue South and 23rd Street South. Local community members, officials from the Housing Authority, and prospective residents are encouraged to attend this momentous occasion as Birmingham continues to evolve toward a brighter future.

The significance of the Southtown Family project goes beyond its brick and mortar. As Foster articulated, “They are our why. We will continue to propel our communities by being an agent of change and a catalyst for opportunity.” With the opening of Southtown Family, Birmingham is taking strides to ensure that its residents enjoy improved living conditions and ample opportunities.

As residents prepare for moving in starting October 1, 2024, the excitement is palpable within the community. The Southtown Family facility stands as a beacon of what collaborative efforts can achieve, ensuring that quality affordable housing remains accessible to those in need.

For More Information

The Housing Authority of the Birmingham District serves over 23,000 residents across various programs, including Section 8. For those interested in learning more about HABD and its initiatives, further details can be found on their official website.

As this new chapter unfolds at Southtown Family, it marks an encouraging development not just in housing but in bringing together the entire community through accessible, quality living spaces.
