UAB Hospital recognized as a ‘Best Regional Hospital for Equitable Access’

In a notable achievement for healthcare accessibility and quality in Birmingham, UAB Hospital has recently been designated as a “Best Regional Hospital for Equitable Access” by the U.S. News & World Report. This recognition showcases the hospital’s commitment to delivering world-class care that meets patients’ diverse needs, irrespective of their socioeconomic backgrounds.

An Honor Beyond Ordinary

Out of 53 hospitals receiving this recognition across the nation, UAB Hospital was singled out for its cohesive blend of high-quality medical services and equal healthcare access to economically disadvantaged patients. The selected hospitals are those that not only figure on the Report’s “Best Regional Hospitals” list but also meet more specific criteria, such as a high percentage of Medicaid patients and significant patient representation from ethnic and racial minorities.

The honor accentuates UAB Hospital’s mission to extend care to patients from socially vulnerable backgrounds, including those from economically deficient households and neighborhoods.

A Longstanding Commitment to Equitable Access

Speaking on the occasion, Brenda Carlisle, the chief executive officer of UAB Hospital, expressed immense pride in receiving the recognition. She emphasized UAB’s steadfast commitment to leading the charge in providing consistent and equal care, independent of a patient’s background or paying capacity.

As a public safety net hospital, UAB Hospital annually provides over $70 million in unreimbursed charity care. The hospital has demonstrated its dedication to community health by assuming management responsibilities for Cooper Green Mercy Health in 2019 and recently broadening its eligibility criteria to assist more individuals in accessing healthcare.

Besides, UAB Hospital has significantly invested in Live HealthSmart Alabama. This trend-setting movement aims to drive a comprehensive improvement in the health of all Alabamians.

A Big Leap Towards Greater Healthcare Equality

The recognition of UAB Hospital underlines the essential role the institution plays in challenging healthcare inequalities and establishing higher standards of care, particularly for patients hailing from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. This achievement brings UAB one step closer to its vision of ensuring that healthcare is a right and not a privilege, accessible to all regardless of social, economic, or racial disparities.

The UAB Hospital community is certain to continue its tireless efforts in bridging healthcare gaps and move steadfast towards a future where equitable access to quality healthcare is a reality for all.
