Birmingham, AL – Atlantic Aviation has officially launched a $40 million redevelopment and expansion project at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM). This significant project aims to enhance the airport’s infrastructure with the introduction of a new Fixed Base Operator (FBO) facility, two additional hangars, and an expansion of approximately seven acres of ramp space.
The newly planned FBO terminal will span about 7,500 square feet, featuring an open concept lobby and reception area, a café, multiple conference rooms, a spacious crew lounge, and a dedicated flight planning area. The initiative reflects a major upgrade to the airport’s capabilities and aims to improve services for general aviation and charter flights.
Included in the redevelopment are two new hangars, each measuring approximately 30,000 square feet, designed to accommodate larger aircraft. These hangars will be equipped with office and shop spaces, and the main doors will stand at 28 feet, allowing for the handling of globally capable aircraft. Additional developments consist of a fuel farm with increased capacity and new concrete hardstands to support large group charter operations.
The project will see the demolition of two smaller existing hangars to make way for the new constructions, while three other hangars and the current FBO terminal will remain operational during the redevelopment process. Following the completion of the new FBO terminal, the existing terminal will undergo minor renovations to meet ongoing operational needs.
Atlantic’s redevelopment is projected to be completed by early 2027. Kurt Schmidt, senior vice president of Operations for Atlantic’s Southeast Region, underscored the significance of this investment as a reflection of strong collaboration with airport and city leadership. The redevelopment is expected to yield economic benefits for the airport, its users, and the broader Birmingham community.
Alongside operational enhancements, the project places emphasis on sustainable construction practices. Recycled materials will be utilized throughout, with new hangars incorporating solar panels to help offset energy usage. Plans for the second hangar will accommodate future solar capabilities as well. Furthermore, the design includes six electric vehicle charging stations to support environmental priorities.
This redevelopment project is poised to not only upgrade amenities at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport but also to bolster the airport’s role in the local economy. Enhanced facilities will cater to the growing demands of both general and commercial aviation, positioning BHM as a strategic hub for domestic and international travel.
As the project progresses, stakeholders from the airport and Atlantic Aviation will continue to work collaboratively to ensure that the development meets the needs of the community while maintaining a commitment to elevating the user experience at Birmingham’s airport. The public can anticipate seeing phased updates on the construction as it advances toward its 2027 completion date.
