Birmingham Community Mourns the Loss of Young Mother Anitra Holloman

Birmingham, Ala. – Just under a week after a tragic mass shooting rocked the city, friends and family came together on Friday evening to honor the life of Anitra Holloman, a 21-year-old mother whose life was tragically taken. The gathering took place under rainy skies, reflecting the somber mood as those who knew Anitra shared their memories and condolences.

Life Cut Short

Anitra was killed outside in the bustling Five Points South entertainment district as she stood with friends. Her untimely death, along with the loss of three others in the shooting, has left a deep impact on the Birmingham community.

“Anitra was a fun girl. She liked life, she loved her mom, loved her family,” Candace Kemp, Anitra’s mother, recalled with tears in her eyes. The grief was palpable as Candace shared that her beloved daughter was not just a part of her family but was also her best friend.

A Mother’s Heartbreak

Describing her day-to-day life without Anitra, Candace said, “It’s been hard, real hard.” She explained that the two shared a close bond; they lived together, and the absence has left Candace grappling with the emptiness in their home. “Just not hearing her, going downstairs—coming into my space, we were never apart from each other,” she said, her voice heavy with emotion.

Tragedy has struck the family twice, as Anitra’s daughter now has to grow up without both parents. Her father was also a victim of gun violence, losing his life nearly two years prior. “Her daughter’s father was killed almost two years ago on October 11, so she was still grieving the death of her child’s father,” shared Kemp.

A Call for Justice

In the wake of their loss, Candace is adamant about ensuring Anitra’s legacy remains alive. “They are gonna make sure that Anitra is never forgotten,” she vowed. With the support of family from both sides, she plans to keep Anitra’s memory alive for her daughter as she navigates a world where both of her parents are absent.

As Candace continues to cope with her loss, she remains hopeful for justice for her daughter and the other victims. “I just want justice for my baby, I’m just praying and asking God to give me strength,” she pleaded. “I don’t want to lose my faith in God more than anything,” she added, expressing the profound impact of her grief.

Authorities Seek Information

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and local authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. There is a reward of up to $100,000 for information that leads to an arrest in connection with the incident.

Birmingham residents are encouraged to keep an eye out for updates and participate in any community efforts to support the families affected by this tragedy. Candlelight vigils and other memorial events may be organized as the city continues to process this profound loss.

The heart of Birmingham beats on, but the scars of violence remain. Community members are reminded about the importance of speaking up when they witness or know something that could prevent more families from experiencing such sorrow.
