Celebrate Art in Birmingham with Exciting Events!
Birmingham is buzzing with excitement as the much-anticipated Magic City Classic Week approaches! This year, the Birmingham Museum of Art (BMA) is poised to make the celebrations even more magical with a spectacular Exhibition Opening Celebration on October 20, 2024. Mark your calendars because this is one event you won’t want to miss!
Art Meets Culture at the BMA
The grand opening celebration is set to highlight two incredible exhibitions: “Hayward Oubre: Structural Integrity” and “Determined to Be: The Sculpture of John Rhoden”. These shows shine a light on talented artists with deep ties to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), showcasing their brilliance and creativity.
Fun for Everyone!
From 1 to 5 PM, the museum will transform into a vibrant hub of creativity and entertainment. Visitors can enjoy food trucks serving delicious bites while the little ones experience the joy of face painting. And that’s not all—bask in the lively atmosphere with performances by the Lawson State Cheer Squad, the Miles College Choir, and a spectacular drumline experience that will surely get your feet tapping!
Diving Into Hayward Oubre’s World
The first exhibition, “Hayward Oubre: Structural Integrity”, opened its doors on October 4, 2024, and will run until February 2, 2025. Oubre (1916-2006) played a monumental role in shaping the landscape of 20th-century American art. With 52 pieces on display—including sculptures, paintings, and prints—this exhibition offers a unique glimpse into the rich world of Oubre’s artistic vision. Known for his extraordinary works utilizing wire coat hangers and flamboyant paintings, Oubre proudly holds the title of the first graduate to earn a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Dillard University. His artistry was deeply influenced by his experiences as a World War II veteran and his relentless commitment to exploring Black art.
John Rhoden’s Impactful Sculptures
The second exhibition is just as impressive! “Determined to Be: The Sculpture of John Rhoden” will kick off on October 19, 2024, and run through April 20, 2025. Birmingham native John Rhoden is celebrated for his substantial contributions to the world of sculpture. His first solo museum exhibition took place at BMA back in 1985, and now he’s back showcasing around fifty sculptures made from bronze, wood, and stone. Rhoden’s unique style, greatly influenced by his extensive travels and appreciation for forms, speaks to audiences in profound ways. Some of his work includes notable public commissions right here in Birmingham, like the impactful sculpture honoring Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth.
