Construction on the Birmingham campus of the University of Alabama

News Summary

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is set to undergo significant transformations following the Board of Trustees’ approval of major construction projects. With a total budget of $167 million, renovations include the Zeigler Medical Research Building and a new Student Services Building replacing Campbell Hall. Additionally, the emergency department at University Hospital will expand, enhancing healthcare services. These developments mark a step forward in the university’s commitment to improving facilities for students and the community, with completion expected by 2025.

Birmingham Campus Sees Big Changes with New Construction Approvals

Exciting news is on the horizon for the Birmingham campus of the University of Alabama, as the Board of Trustees has given the green light to several major construction projects during their recent meeting on February 7. With a whopping budget of $167 million set aside for these initiatives, students, faculty, and the surrounding community can look forward to a more modern and efficient campus.

Revamping the Zeigler Medical Research Building

First up on the renovation list is the Zeigler Medical Research Building, located at 703 19th St. South. Plans have been approved to renovate the fifth floor, expanding research, imaging, and procedure spaces across a generous 11,800 square feet area. This extensive renovation is going to cost around $13 million and will undoubtedly enhance the research capabilities at UAB, helping to foster innovation and address important medical questions.

A Fresh Start with the New Student Services Building

Next, some significant changes are coming for student services, as the trustees approved the demolition of Campbell Hall. In its place, a brand-new student services and administration building will rise at 1300 University Blvd. Spanning an impressive 134,000 square feet, this facility will house various critical offices, including those for the president, provost, finance, administration, public relations, and university relations. Plus, it will accommodate essential services such as admissions, the registrar’s office, financial aid, a writing center, and an academic success center. With a project budget of $84 million, funded by future UAB bond funds and the institutional central reserve fund, this new addition will streamline services for students, making it easier than ever to access support and information.

Emergency Department Expansion at University Hospital

In a step to improve healthcare services, the board has also approved a significant expansion of the UAB Health System’s downtown emergency department. This ambitious project includes a 42,600-square foot expansion, alongside renovations to over 29,000 square feet of the existing emergency department. When completed, the facility will feature 59 new exam rooms, more waiting space, and enhanced imaging capabilities, all aimed at improving patient care. The budget for this essential upgrade stands at $70 million, financed through a combination of state ETF supplemental appropriation and hospital plant funds.

Keeping Up with Current Needs

These improvements are part of a broader trend at UAB, with numerous construction projects already underway across the campus, expected to culminate by 2025. While Birmingham is set to see these transformative changes, the board also approved additional renovations for the Tuscaloosa campus, indicating a commitment to growth and development throughout the university system.

A Bright Future

The recent decisions by the UAB Board of Trustees reflect a strong vision for the future of education and healthcare in Birmingham. With cutting-edge facilities and improved services on the way, both students and staff can be excited about what lies ahead. As these projects unfold, they promise to not only enhance the campus aesthetic but also boost functionality, ensuring that UAB continues to be a leader in academic and healthcare excellence.

Stay tuned for more updates as these projects kick into high gear, bringing a wave of modernity to the Birmingham campus!
