Birmingham Costumer April Bonasera Takes Center Stage in “Megalopolis”

Birmingham, Alabama – Birmingham-based costumer and seamstress April Bonasera had the unique opportunity to see her talent shine on the big screen in the latest film directed by the renowned Francis Ford Coppola. The film, titled “Megalopolis”, is a sci-fi drama that features notable actors such as Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, and Aubrey Plaza, among others. Bonasera dedicated six months to creating costumes for this major production, and now, her hard work has culminated in a stunning visual representation in theaters.

From Birmingham to Hollywood

Bonasera, a graduate of the University of Alabama and a talented professional with over 20 years in the costume industry, expressed excitement and gratitude for being a part of such a significant project. Her previous experience includes costume work for the TV series “Kindred” and “Legacies”, as well as performing in various roles at The Atlanta Opera. This latest endeavor marks a highlight in her career.

“I got involved just through word of mouth,” Bonasera shared. “I worked on a film before called ‘Pain Hustlers’ on Netflix, and I was recommended from there. When the costume supervisor mentioned that Milena Canonero was the designer, I was incredibly excited. It was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”

A Collaboration with a Legend

Milena Canonero is known for her impressive work in film costume design, having won four Academy Awards for movies like “Barry Lyndon” and “The Grand Budapest Hotel”. Canonero, along with her team, played a significant role in shaping the overall aesthetic of “Megalopolis,” but Bonasera was entrusted with specific costume pieces that contributed to the film’s visual flair.

“I worked on a few specific pieces,” Bonasera explained, gently highlighting her favorite work, a striking black velvet jacket worn by Aubrey Plaza’s character. “The design, especially the hooded aspect, is just stunning. The black with the laser-cut velvet is not only visually appealing, but it also conveys a strong character presence,” she added.

Reflecting on Her Journey

After moving back to Birmingham in September 2023, Bonasera took the leap to start her own full-service costume studio called Dye Dress Magic. This recent project has allowed her to reflect on her achievements and aspirations, especially during a time of uncertainty in the film industry.

Bonasera mentioned, “I wish my father could see what I’ve accomplished. I’ve worked really hard to get to this point, and it means so much to me. The journey in this industry isn’t easy, and being part of ‘Megalopolis’ reminds me of how far I’ve come.” Her ambition stretches beyond film, as Bonasera also creates textile art using vintage linens dyed with local Alabama plants, which she sells at various art venues, including The Market at Pepper Place.
