Birmingham Gears Up for Tommy Prine’s Show

Birmingham, Alabama – Music lovers are in for a treat this weekend as Tommy Prine, the son of the legendary singer-songwriter John Prine, is set to take the stage at the popular music venue, Saturn. After recently wrapping up a gig in Mississippi, Tommy is excited to return to the Magic City for the show scheduled for Saturday at 7:30 PM.

Discovering Roots and Connections

On his journey, Tommy made an intriguing discovery about his father’s connection to Birmingham. During a rehearsal, he was reminded of a line from John Prine’s song, “The Lonesome Friends of Science,” where the iconic statue Vulcan makes a notable appearance. “The Vulcan lives in Birmingham, sometimes he just don’t give a damn,” he reflected, and it struck him how intertwined his father’s legacy is with this vibrant city.

Choosing to pursue music wasn’t something that occurred to Tommy until the loss of a close friend pushed him towards songwriting. He began to channel his emotions into music after his father’s passing in 2020 as well. “It’s been so beautiful,” Tommy expressed. “Best thing I’ve ever done.” His first album, “This Far South,” released last year, has received praise for capturing his own voice while paying homage to his father’s artistry.

Walking His Own Path

As a newcomer to the music scene, Tommy initially felt pressure over comparisons with his father. “I wondered if people would just expect John Prine 2.0,” he shared, but he quickly realized that while he respects his father’s legacy, he wants to carve out his own path. “I can’t control anyone’s preconceived notions; the only thing I can change is my performance,” he noted with confidence. In a humble yet assertive manner, he emphasized, “If they enjoy it, hell yeah. If they’re looking for something else, sorry; that’s not what we’re doing.”

The Power of Acceptance

For Tommy, gaining recognition as an artist in his own right has been one of the most rewarding parts of his new career. “What meant the most to me was the acceptance from my fellow artists. That meant the world to me,” he declared. While numbers matter in the music industry, it’s the support of other musicians that truly resonates with him. “It will always be 200 musicians that mean the most to me,” Tommy added, showing his dedication to community.

Finding Creativity on the Road

Despite the excitement of touring, Tommy admitted that finding time to write new material can be a challenge. After his current tour wraps up in October, he looks forward to a well-deserved break to focus on creating his next album. “This Far South was basically a collection of stories and experiences from my childhood to when I was 25,” he explained. For the next album, he plans to dive into the changes he’s experienced since then, promising a deeply personal record.
