Fall Pet Adoption Event

Birmingham Prepares for Fall Pet Adoption Event

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — As the leaves begin to change and the weather cools, local animal shelters are gearing up for a heartwarming initiative aimed at finding forever homes for pets in need. The BISSELL Pet Foundation will host its annual “Empty the Shelters” reduced-fee event from October 1 to October 15. This event will make pet adoption more affordable, with fees set at $50 or less for adopting families.

Who Is Participating?

This fall, three local shelters will be participating in the “Empty the Shelters” event: the Greater Birmingham Humane Society, CARE Humane Society in Auburn, and Florence Lauderdale Animal Services. Under this initiative, adopting families can expect to bring home a pet that is not only vaccinated but also spayed or neutered. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone looking to add a furry friend to their household.

The Need for Action

Cathy Bissell, the founder of the BISSELL Pet Foundation, emphasizes the urgency of the situation. “Right now, our nation’s animal shelters are in crisis with too many pets coming in and not enough adoptions to keep up. Euthanasia rates have hit a 3-year-high, and healthy, adoptable pets are at risk due to space constraints,” she stated. This stark reality underscores the importance of community involvement in adopting and fostering pets in need.

The message is clear: adopting a pet not only brings joy to your home but also helps alleviate the burden on local shelters. As more families open their homes to pets, it enables shelters to create space and support for even more animals requiring care.

How You Can Help

If adoption isn’t an option for you at this time, the foundation encourages community members to consider fostering. Fostering a pet can provide essential temporary support and is another crucial way to aid in the overall welfare of animals in our community. “Deserving pets across the country are counting on all of us,” Bissell added, encouraging a sense of shared responsibility.
