With the intention of enhancing community safety, the department encourages individuals to apply online. Birmingham Police Department Launches Recruitment Drive to Boost Staffing

An exciting opportunity has emerged in Birmingham as the Birmingham Police Department launches a major recruitment drive to address its pressing staffing shortage. With the goal of improving the quality of life for residents, the department is eager to welcome new applicants to join its ranks and help keep the community safe.

How to Apply

State of Alabama Minimum Standards, Jefferson County Personnel Board standards, and specific criteria set by the Birmingham Police Department.

A Rigorous Selection Process

The selection process is no walk in the park. Every applicant must complete various stages, which include both a written test and a physical abilities test designed to assess whether candidates possess the stamina necessary for the training academy and to meet the state’s standards. The physical abilities test is particularly harsh, including challenges like pushing a car, scaling a fence, crawling through a window, walking on a balance beam, and dragging a dummy—all of which must be completed within a brisk 90 seconds.

Training Academy Details

Those who make the cut will find themselves enrolled in the Birmingham Police Academy, where they will undergo a robust curriculum that spans approximately 800 hours of instruction over 20 to 22 weeks. Out of those hours, 560 are mandated by the Alabama Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission.

Throughout their time in the academy, recruits tackle a variety of subjects essential for their future roles. From crime scene procedures to patrol tactics, first aid to firearms training, no stone is left unturned. The academy operates on a schedule of four ten-hour days each week, ensuring that recruits are well-prepared for the rigors of active duty.

Field Training and Career Opportunities

After completing the academy, new officers will be sworn in and paired with a Field Training Officer (FTO) in the Patrol Division for an additional training period of at least 16 weeks. This hands-on experience is pivotal in preparing recruits for their future responsibilities as police officers.

Upon successful completion of training, officers will have the opportunity to specialize in various roles after serving a minimum of three years. Options include becoming a Task Force Officer, School Resource Officer, Detective, or Canine Handler, among others.

Encouraging Participation

In an encouraging sign, recent recruitment efforts have led to increased participation in physical agility screenings, with around 75 individuals attending a recent screening event. Over 110 applicants are expected to enter the hiring process for the March Birmingham Police Academy class, demonstrating a renewed interest in joining the police force.

Support for All Applicants

To support those who may not pass the physical agility test on their first try, the department aims to provide assistance to ensure future success. With another academy class set to start in July, specific screening dates are still in the works, giving aspiring officers a chance to prepare.

Addressing Staffing Challenges

With recent challenges in recruitment and retention, the department has found itself about 300 officers short of its ideal staffing levels. To combat this shortage, current signing bonuses for new officers have been ramped up to a competitive $10,000, showcasing the city’s commitment to attracting new talent.

In summary, the Birmingham Police Department is actively seeking dedicated, enthusiastic individuals willing to serve their community. By doubling down on recruitment strategies and support, they’re determined to bolster their ranks and further ensure the safety of Birmingham’s residents. If you think you have what it takes, why not take the first step today?
