Local tire shop owner Gabe Fikes noted that tires can wear out between 20 to 25 percent faster on unpaved roads compared to smoother surfaces. This accelerated deterioration may lead to further vehicle maintenance costs, such as damage to car components like shocks, struts, and suspension systems.

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has been actively working on the road’s repair but facing challenges that have prolonged the process. Todd Connell, who manages the Birmingham area for ALDOT, explained that crews have been occupied with sealing bridges and replacing concrete slabs since the time the asphalt was removed. While considerable progress has been made since October, it may not be immediately noticeable to the public.

Originally, ALDOT aimed to complete the repaving of the road by April; however, delays attributed to weather conditions have pushed this timeline back. Fortunately, crews are expected to start laying asphalt within the coming week, and the entire repaving project is anticipated to be finalized by July. Connell has stated that the repair timeline remains aligned with earlier projections and has not extended due to discovering additional issues after the asphalt removal.

Frustration levels among the community are palpable, with residents eager for the necessary repairs to be expedited. Many are aware that tax revenues are available for infrastructure projects, and some individuals are calling on authorities for quicker action. The expected repaving work will be conducted at night, though specific start dates remain uncertain. Lane closures are expected during this period, potentially affecting traffic flow.

The situation at I-59/20 emphasizes the broader conversation regarding infrastructure maintenance and the importance of keeping roads in acceptable conditions.
