Two individuals were struck by falling tree limbs on Saturday morning at 1900 21st Street South. Tragically, one victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. As of now, details regarding their identities and employment statuses remain unclear. In a related incident in northern Jefferson County, a man was killed after being struck by a tree he was reportedly working on. This incident occurred on Neely Road before 6:30 p.m., and authorities confirmed that the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.
On Monday morning, another fatality was reported when 79-year-old Suzanne Michael Wilson died after a tree fell on her apartment at Mountain Brook Court. The Jefferson County Coroner has confirmed her identity. As a precautionary measure, the Mountain Brook fire department has turned over the scene to police, citing concerns about structural integrity and additional risks posed to the community.
The severe storms affected numerous areas across Alabama, causing significant power outages. As of Monday morning, over 81,000 Alabama Power customers were without electricity. Roadways were also severely impacted; Montevallo Road stayed closed for several hours due to storm damage, while Bessemer experienced blockages from fallen trees and downed power lines. Traffic lights were also non-functional in Helena, and multiple roads remained closed because of storm-related issues. In Alabaster’s Scottsdale neighborhood, several homes were damaged as trees fell on them. Additionally, a tree fell onto a house in Sylacauga on South Broadway Avenue.
On Tuesday morning, yet another incident was reported when a driver was killed by a falling tree that struck their vehicle at 10:47 a.m. on Crestwood Boulevard, in front of the Alabama Waldorf School. Witnesses noted that the sound of the tree falling was unusual and alarming. Fortunately, Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that no other injuries occurred as a result of this accident, but traffic was redirected on Crestwood Boulevard to ensure public safety.
Mountain Brook Battalion Chief Justin Baker described the events as “surreal,” stressing the importance of weather awareness during thunderstorms. Public safety officials continue to urge residents to stay vigilant and be aware of their surroundings during such weather conditions.
As the situation develops, local authorities will provide further updates regarding the incidents and safety measures for the community.
