Birmingham Police Charge 21-Year-Old in Connection with Fatal East Lake Park Shooting

Birmingham authorities have charged a 21-year-old man, De’Aerius Johnson, with murder and first-degree assault following a deadly shooting at East Lake Park on Wednesday night. The incident resulted in the death of 23-year-old Cameron Demijah Little and left another woman injured.

The shooting incident occurred just after 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the 100 block of 84th North at East Lake Park. The city’s gunfire detection system, known as ShotSpotter, alerted police to approximately 10 gunshots in the area. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Cameron Demijah Little unresponsive. He was subsequently pronounced dead by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service at 12:01 a.m.

The injured woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken to UAB Hospital via a private vehicle with non-life-threatening injuries.

De’Aerius Johnson was arrested on Saturday, following an operation led by the Birmingham Police Department’s Crime Reduction Team in collaboration with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. The arrest took place in the 3000 Block of 15th Street Ensley. Johnson was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 7:39 p.m. on Saturday and is currently being held without bond.

Second Shooting Incident on the Same Night

On the same night as the East Lake Park shooting, Birmingham witnessed another unrelated shooting incident. Police reported that 38-year-old Corey Lavel Tremble was found wounded in the 700 block of 17th Street Ensley and subsequently pronounced dead at 3:37 a.m. on Thursday. This incident adds to the growing concern over gun violence in the city.

Statistics on Recent Homicides

Cameron Demijah Little and Corey Lavel Tremble are part of a troubling statistic, as both residents contributed to the city’s escalating homicide rate. Birmingham has recorded a total of 42 homicides this year alone, while Jefferson County has reported 66 homicides overall.

Ongoing Investigation and Community Call to Action

Authorities are actively seeking information regarding the circumstances of both shootings. Questions remain regarding the connections, if any, between the two incidents and whether there were additional witnesses who could provide valuable information. Police are urging anyone with information to reach out to the Birmingham Police Department or Crime Stoppers as they continue their investigation.
