Birmingham Stallions vs San Antonio Brahmas game action

News Summary

The Birmingham Stallions showcased their defensive prowess with a resounding 26-3 victory against the San Antonio Brahmas. This win elevates the Stallions to a 4-2 record, tying them for the top spot in the USFL Conference. Key defensive plays from Steven Gilmore and a strong performance from quarterback Case Cookus propelled Birmingham’s win. The Stallions now look to build on this momentum in their upcoming game against the Houston Roughnecks.

Birmingham – The Birmingham Stallions dominated the San Antonio Brahmas with a decisive 26-3 victory on May 4, 2025, at Protective Stadium in Birmingham. This win improves the Stallions’ record to 4-2 and ties them for the lead in the USFL Conference with the Michigan Panthers, while the Brahmas fall to 1-5.

Stallions’ cornerback Steven Gilmore made a significant impact on defense by recording an interception during the game. Despite a promising start for San Antonio’s quarterback, Kevin Hogan, who completed a 56-yard pass to wide receiver Justin Smith on his first play, the Brahmas’ offense struggled throughout the contest. Hogan connected with Smith again for a 45-yard gain just before halftime; however, the Brahmas were limited to just 77 yards on their remaining 40 offensive snaps.

The Stallions’ defense showcased their strength by allowing only 24 rushing yards on 13 attempts and preventing any conversions on 10 third-down attempts. They managed to sack Hogan three times and broke up seven of his passes. Additionally, linebacker Tae Crowder recovered a fumble forced by defensive tackle Marvin Wilson, contributing to the Stallions’ dominant defensive display. With only five touchdowns allowed through six games, Birmingham boasts the stingiest defense in the UFL.

Birmingham head coach Skip Holtz acknowledged the impressive defensive performance, highlighting the team’s advantage in time of possession with 9:38 more than San Antonio. The Stallions produced a total of 313 yards of offense during the game, effectively controlling the game’s tempo.

The Stallions’ scoring began in the first quarter with running back Ricky Person rushing for a 4-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 6-0 with just over two minutes left in the period. Quarterback Case Cookus then increased the lead to 12-0 by throwing a 43-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Amari Rodgers just before halftime.

Cookus had an efficient performance, completing 16 of 23 passes for 166 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Backup quarterback Andrew Peasley also saw action, completing 5 of 8 passes for 79 yards, before leaving the game early after being shaken up on a rushing attempt.

In the fourth quarter, Cookus threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jace Sternberger, followed by a successful 2-point conversion to tight end Jordan Thomas. The Stallions also scored two field goals in the third quarter, courtesy of kicker Harrison Mevis, who successfully made attempts from 49 and 50 yards. These scoring drives were aided by strong punt returns that positioned the team in San Antonio’s territory.

The Stallions are scheduled to play their next game against the Houston Roughnecks on Sunday, May 11, at 11 a.m. CDT at Protective Stadium, aiming to build on their recent success. As the season progresses, Birmingham appears poised to challenge for a top spot in their conference, underpinned by a formidable defense and a balanced offensive attack.
