If you live in Birmingham or are just passing through, February is shaping up to be a very special month! As we step into Black History Month, there’s a cornucopia of activities lined up that promise to honor and celebrate the incredible contributions of African Americans to our shared history. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a good celebration?
Kick-Off with UAB Men’s Basketball
Mark your calendars, sports fans! February 1 will see the UAB Men’s Basketball team take on the Charlotte 49ers in a much-anticipated game at Bartow Arena. This thrilling matchup kicks off Black History Month, and it’s a great opportunity for members of the UAB Black Alumni Association to gather and show their support. Nothing quite like a little friendly competition to bring people together!
Learning About the Tuskegee Airmen
Next up, on the educational front, there’s a fantastic presentation at the Trussville Public Library by Dr. Lisa Bratton. She’ll be diving into the stories of the Tuskegee Airmen—In Their Own Words, focusing on the outstanding contributions of these WWII pilots. Learning about history is always easier and so much more engaging when it’s delivered in a personal way, and this event sounds like just the ticket!
A Legacy of Healthcare and Courage
Also planned is a series on the legacy of healthcare pioneer Dr. James Montgomery, who made history as the first Black doctor at UAB Hospital in 1964. His commitment to civil rights in healthcare set the bar high. Discussions will include the impactful Knocking at the Door series exploring his legacy and the strides made since.
Exploring the Emotions of Nonviolence
Ever wondered about the emotional landscape of the Civil Rights Movement? Don’t miss Dr. Meena Krishnamurthy discussing her book, The Emotions of Nonviolence, with a focus on King Jr.’s legendary ‘Letter from a Birmingham Jail.’ It promises to be a revealing exploration that connects past and present.
A Celebration for Young Minds
For K-12 students, we have a special dedication event highlighting the achievements of notable Black figures in music and sports. This session will feature videos and musical performances, making learning about history enjoyable and engaging for the younger generation!
Movie Night and More Fun
If you’re in the mood for some entertainment, head over to the Titusville Public Library for a cozy movie night to commemorate Black History Month. And who doesn’t love popcorn while catching a film? It’s a great way to relax and still honor the rich history being celebrated this month.
Diving Deep into History
For those interested in more serious topics, there is also a virtual event hosted by UAB in partnership with the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. Expect a thought-provoking discussion about the history of prison labor in Alabama and across the U.S., revealing often-overlooked aspects of our shared past.
Honoring Lives Lost
The Jefferson County Memorial Quilt project is a deeply moving initiative honoring the 33 African Americans lynched in Jefferson County. Community members will be able to participate through sewing workshops, adding a personal touch to this monumental remembrance.
Heritage Sites to Explore
Birmingham has so much history waiting to be explored! Don’t forget to visit the A.G. Gaston Motel, an important site from the 1950s, as well as the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame at Carver Theatre. These locations serve as fantastic reminders of the resilience and creativity of African Americans throughout history.
A Range of Celebratory Activities
The Birmingham Public Library is stepping up its game with nearly 70 free programs across 15 locations. Expect an array of exciting live performances, film screenings, educational lectures, and engaging workshops throughout February. There is truly something for everyone!
