Birmingham, Alabama – Brian Lee Bellenger, a beloved member of the Birmingham community, passed away on July 19, 2025, following a valiant struggle with cancer. He was 57 years old and remembered fondly for his resilience, dedication to community service, and deep connections with family and friends.

Born on March 3, 1968, in Birmingham, Alabama, Brian faced various health challenges throughout his life. His journey began with a diagnosis of leukemia during his freshman year at Gardendale High School, which necessitated a bone marrow transplant from his sister in Seattle, Washington. After successfully overcoming this significant health hurdle, he returned to Gardendale High School and graduated with honors, known for his industrious spirit, earning the title of Most Outstanding Student in 1986.

Brian pursued higher education at Auburn University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, followed by a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. During his time at Auburn, he was a dedicated member of the Auburn University Singers, forging lifelong friendships and becoming a cherished figure to many, including the children of fellow members, who fondly referred to him as “Uncle Bri Bri.”

In his professional career, Brian initially worked for the State of Alabama before making a significant impact at the Jefferson County Personnel Board in Birmingham, where he was respected for his work ethic and character. His battle with cancer drew remarkable support from his colleagues who admired not only his professional contributions but also his resilience during challenging times.

Brian’s commitment to community extended beyond his work. For over 30 years, he considered Highlands United Methodist Church his spiritual home, actively participating in church leadership roles and contributing significantly to the youth ministry. His long-standing involvement included serving as the head verger, where he impacted the lives of many, earning deep respect and affection from those around him.

His life was also rich with personal connections. Though never married, Brian was a devoted “funcle” to his five nieces and nephews, whom he adored and spoiled. He made unforgettable memories, including planning custom trips to New York City for each of their twelfth birthdays and attending various events to support them, earning the nickname “Gru” among his family.

Brian was also passionate about Auburn athletics, Camp Sumatanga, travel, and the arts. He actively participated in a 20-year-old book club, further reflecting his interests and love for learning. He recently created cherished memories with his family during pool days and family weddings, particularly his joy upon meeting his great nieces and great nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father, Robert L. Bellenger, and is survived by his mother, Katherine Mosley Bellenger; sister, Nan (Michael) Burrow; brother, Alan (Raegan) Bellenger; and his nieces and nephews: John Michael (Tori) Burrow, Julie (Seth) Tunstall, Nathan (Maggie) Burrow, Mae Beth Bellenger, and Whit Bellenger. His best friend, Chad (Richelle) Simmons, along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who became a family, will also mourn his loss.

Visitation for Brian Bellenger is scheduled for Friday, July 25, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Homewood. A celebration of his life will take place on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Highlands United Methodist Church in Birmingham. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations in Brian’s memory to Highlands United Methodist Church or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Arrangements for the services are being managed by Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood.
