Birmingham Police Seek More Information One Week After Deadly Shooting

BIRMINGHAM – As the community continues to grapple with the aftermath of the tragic mass shooting that took place last Saturday in the city’s Five Points South neighborhood, Birmingham police are looking for additional information to assist in their investigation. Four individuals lost their lives, and 17 others were injured when a barrage of automatic gunfire erupted outside the Hush hookah bar and cigar lounge on Magnolia Avenue.

Investigation Underway

Police Chief Scott Thurmond stated that investigators have received hundreds of tips regarding the shooting, but more information is still needed. As of Friday afternoon, Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama reported that they had received about 101 tips, with many more sent directly to the police.

“We’ve got to work through those tips,” Chief Thurmond explained in a press briefing. “Some are better than others, and then we have to piece them all together.” This collaborative effort among multiple sources is crucial to build a clearer picture of the events that unfolded on that fateful night.

Daily Strategy Meetings

Thurmond mentioned that investigators meet daily to discuss developments and strategize moving forward. “I’m very happy with the direction it’s going,” he remarked. “It just takes some time unfortunately. I wish we already had individuals in jail, but we don’t. We are moving in a great direction though.”

A Focus on Possible Targeted Shooting

Authorities are focusing their investigation on the theory that the shooting was a murder-for-hire, specifically targeting at least one of the men who lost their lives. The victims were identified as Roderick Lynn Patterson Jr., 26, Anitra Holloman, 21, Tahj Booker, 27, and Carlos McCain, 27. Chief Thurmond indicated that they have identified the types of firearms used in the incident, though details have not been made public at this time.

Collaboration with Federal Agencies

The Birmingham Police Department is receiving assistance from both the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) as they continue to investigate this complex case. Chief Thurmond emphasized that one of the ultimate goals is to identify the individuals responsible for the shooting and ensure justice is served for the victims and their families.

Community Participation Encouraged

Residents and community members have an important role to play as this investigation unfolds. Chief Thurmond is urging those who may have information related to the shooting to come forward. “All of it helps,” he reiterated, urging cooperation from the public in providing any insights or details they might have seen or heard.

A reward of $100,000 is currently being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for this heinous act. Those with relevant information are encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.

One Week Later

As we approach the one-week mark since the shooting, the community remains in mourning. Vigils are being held, and discussions about the need for increased community safety continue to be prominent. The hope is that with continued efforts from both law enforcement and the community, light will be shed on the events of that night, and those affected can begin to heal.

For now, the investigation continues, and Birmingham residents are reminded of the vital importance of community involvement in bringing justice to those affected by this tragedy.
