Homewood Native Racquel Williams Achieves Broadway Stardom with Debut in The Book of Mormon

Homewood Native Makes Waves on Broadway: Racquel Williams’ Stellar Debut

In the bustling streets of New York City, a dream is taking center stage! Local talent Racquel Williams, who proudly hails from Homewood, Alabama, has made her much-anticipated Broadway debut in the hit musical The Book of Mormon. Talk about a star on the rise!

A Journey to the Big Stage

Williams, now 28, has long harbored aspirations of performing on one of the most coveted stages in the world. “It’s just such a rare thing to happen,” she says, reflecting on her journey. “My parents taught me to be persistent and not let the dream die. I felt like I was born for this, so I always knew it was going to happen!”

In The Book of Mormon, a hilarious and audacious musical comedy following two missionaries in Uganda, Williams takes on a challenging role as a “swing.” This means she covers multiple roles in the female ensemble, as well as the lead! Her head is constantly in motion, juggling the different tracks and ensuring she’s not stepping on anyone’s toes in the ensemble.

Preparation for the Spotlight

A huge part of her success comes from the rigorous rehearsal process. Thankfully, Williams had six weeks to shadow the dance captain and soak up the intricate details of every role. “When I get the call to perform a different track, I go through the entire show in my head,” says Williams. “I have to keep track of dance charts and music to make sure I’m ready!”

From Texas to Homewood

Born in San Antonio, Texas, Racquel is the middle child among five siblings. While her brothers and sisters were wrapped up in sports and academics, Racquel found her calling in the arts, thanks to her supportive mom who encouraged her talent. “My childhood was filled with rehearsals at Birmingham’s Red Mountain Theatre Company,” she reminisces. “When I discovered my love for theatre at 13, it felt as if I unlocked a door to a whole new world.”

While attending Homewood High School, Racquel soared through musicals and show choir performances. “I remember performing solos as a middle schooler in front of high schoolers. It made me feel like a rock star!” she beams. Her choir teacher, Scott Thorne, recognizes her raw talent better than anyone. “From the moment I saw her, I knew she was special,” he recalls, proud of her accomplishments. “Seeing her on that Broadway stage felt surreal. It’s just the beginning for Racquel!”

A Community that Believes

Support from her school and community kept Racquel motivated year after year. “My choir teacher always believed in my potential,” she says. “He knew I had the talent to make it to Broadway!” In addition, her journey has also thrived thanks to mentors like Keith Cromwell from the Red Mountain Theater, who mirrors Racquel’s enthusiasm: “She’s not just a great performer; she’s an incredible human being!”

Moving to the City that Never Sleeps

After graduating in 2014, Racquel packed her bags and headed for New York City, where she attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. “I always felt like I was meant to be here,” she shares, reminiscing about her transition. “What I miss most about home is the peacefulness of Homewood and exploring new restaurants!”

Landing her first audition for The Book of Mormon was truly a case of fate. “My professor had been in the original cast! Who would have thought that this would end up being my Broadway debut?” she laughs. On October 1, she stepped onto the stage for her big moment, tackling the elusive “Steak Knife” track—the details of which remain a mystery that fans must uncover by attending the show itself!

A Star in the Making

We can’t wait to see where Racquel Williams’ journey leads her next this talented Broadway star is just getting started! If you’re in New York City, why not grab a ticket and catch her in action? Not only will you see a breathtaking performance, but you’ll also be witnessing a true talent who is making her dreams come true!
