Exciting Transformation Ahead as Homewood Plans New Medical Facility at Former Belk Building

Exciting Transformation Ahead for Homewood!

Homewood residents, get ready for some big changes in your neighborhood! The Planning Commission has just recommended a proposal to transform the former Belk Building at Brookwood Village into a state-of-the-art medical facility. This new center will be operated by the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center, and it looks like quite a project is on the horizon!

What Happened at the Meeting?

On a chilly Tuesday night, the Planning Commission met and discussed this ambitious renovation plan. With a vote of 6-2 and one abstention, the commission decided to push this proposal forward after a public hearing that had plenty of input from local residents. In fact, the air buzzed with excitement (and a bit of concern) as people shared their thoughts on the development. Four residents voiced their opinions, raising questions and suggesting alternatives, especially regarding retail options in the area.

Voices from the Community

Jeremy Love, a passionate resident of Homewood, emphasized the need for more retail options, suggesting that the Andrews project might not be the best fit for Brookwood. He encouraged the leaders to explore alternative locations that could better serve the community’s shopping needs. Following his lead, Ashley Condon, who works in hospitality, chimed in, pointing out that missing out on this opportunity could mean a lost chance at significant economic growth for our lovely city. She lamented how Birmingham sometimes falls short in attracting the kind of developments that could propel our community forward.

Positive Development Ahead

Responding to these concerns, Paul Darden from Fairway Investments eased worries by stating that they have additional plans in the pipeline for Brookwood Village. He referred to the Andrews Sports Medicine proposal as a fantastic opportunity to breathe new life into the area, hinting at a brighter future for Brookwood Village.

What’s Next for the Project?

Now that the Planning Commission has given the thumbs-up, the City Council will have its turn. Jennifer Andress, the Chair of the Homewood City Council’s Planning and Development Committee, announced that the Andrews proposal will be on the council’s agenda on November 18th. Following that, the project will be reviewed by the Planning and Development Committee again on November 25th, before heading back to the council for a public hearing in December. Exciting times ahead!

When Will Construction Start?

During their presentation on November 5th, the representatives for Andrews expressed hopes to break ground in early 2025. That’s just around the corner, and we can’t wait to see the plans unfold! It looks like Homewood is about to become even better!
