Sensory-Inclusive Magic Show and More at Journey of Hope, August 17

August 14, 2024: Prepare to behold the fascinating world of illusion as United Ability gets set to host an exclusive sensory-inclusive magic show in Birmingham this August at the annual Journey of Hope fundraising event.

Journey of Hope 2024—Event Details

On the evening of Saturday, August 17, the doors of hope will swing wide open to residents of Birmingham to be part of this magical night. The magic will unfurl at UAB Alys Stephens Center, 1200 10th Ave S, Birmingham, AL 35294. Tickets are available for individuals aged 13 and above at a cost of $100, while children between the ages of 7-12 can join in for $35. For children aged six and under, admission to the event is free of cost.

Starting from 5PM, guests will be welcomed with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, followed by a seated program at 6:30PM. A dessert reception slated for 7:30PM is sure to add sweetness to this magical night.

The Magic of Dr. Kevin Spencer

Adding dazzle to the show is the award-winning Dr. Kevin Spencer, a world-renowned illusionist and the international expert in the therapeutic benefits of simple magic tricks. Tying his profound ties with United Ability to his magical performance, the evening is viewed to be a fusion of fun, fascination, and therapy.

With origins from Little Rock, Arkansas, Dr. Spencer offers his program called Magic Therapy™ to children and adults struggling with physical and developmental disorders and autism. It’s a research-backed therapeutic intervention that allows individuals to engage their brains and hands in simple magic tricks, thereby making therapy a fun, interactive, and highly impactful process.

Therapy Disguised as Fun

Educational and fun, Magic Therapy™ brings together imagination and skills to help improve attention span, fine motor skills and gross motor functions, capacity to sequence and organize tasks, memory skills, among many other cognitive abilities. The program is perceived to provide therapy, while the participants comprehend it merely as magic, thereby enhancing the overall learning and development experience.

Sensory-Inclusive Performance

This performance is welcoming to all audiences, including children with autism or other developmental or intellectual disabilities. It provides an inclusive platform for everyone to feel a part of the magical experience and promotes social integration.

Birmingham is all set to host one of the most thrilling nights on August 17, brimming with magic, hope, diversity, and inclusivity. It will not just be about the thrill that magic tricks offer, but about the magic that inclusivity and acceptance in society can manifest.

The sensory-inclusive magic show is a signal that perhaps we are better people when we are open to engaging with someone different than us. It may just be what the city needs to spark a larger conversation about acceptance and awareness.
