Families celebrating Mother's Day in Central Alabama

News Summary

Central Alabama is preparing for a weekend of Mother’s Day celebrations, despite predictions of scattered thunderstorms. A range of events, including Lillie’s Cup Mother’s Day Tea and Mom’s Melanin and Memories, are scheduled to honor mothers. Friday will kick off festive activities, coinciding with various college graduations. Additional highlights include free admission for mothers at the Montgomery Zoo and the Regions Tradition golf event. Attendees are advised to remain mindful of the potential for severe weather, particularly on Sunday, as they plan their celebrations.

Central Alabama is gearing up for a weekend of celebrations for Mother’s Day, despite facing a forecast of rainy weather which may dampen some outdoor activities. Scattered thunderstorms are expected to hit the area particularly on Friday and Sunday, according to weather predictions.

Despite the gloomy outlook, Central Alabama has a variety of events scheduled to honor mothers over the weekend. WVTM 13 has compiled a comprehensive list of festivities and activities designed to make the day special for families and mothers alike.

Among the highlights, several popular events are set to take place, including Lillie’s Cup Mother’s Day Tea, Mom’s Melanin and Memories, and Mama’s, Makeovers & Margs. These events promise to offer families unique ways to celebrate the occasion, allowing mothers to enjoy some pampering and quality time with loved ones.

On Friday, the area will see a kickoff to the celebrations with events leading up to the main day. Notably, Alabama A&M, the University of South Alabama, and Auburn University will hold their college graduations, adding to the weekend’s festivities. Families attending these ceremonies may also be looking for ways to celebrate both graduation and Mother’s Day.

In addition to Mother’s Day activities, several other notable events will occur throughout the weekend, including:

  • The Regions Tradition, a premier PGA Tour Champions golf event at Greystone Golf & Country Club from May 14-18.
  • The Logan Martin Lakefest & Boat Show, featuring live music, fireworks, food trucks, and local vendors from May 9-11.
  • The acclaimed Broadway musical “Beetlejuice”, performing at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex through May 11.
  • Free admission for mothers at the Montgomery Zoo on Mother’s Day.
  • Art in the Park, showcasing over 60 artists at Gamble Park on May 10.
  • The Birmingham Museum of Art’s African Heritage Festival, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on May 10.

However, organizers and participants are urged to be mindful of the weather forecast. Severe thunderstorms are predicted on Sunday, particularly from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., with concerns over damaging winds and large hail. An upper-air low pressure system is responsible for the unsettled weather, which is expected to persist through early next week.

Temperatures throughout this rainy weekend are projected to stay in the middle to upper 70s. Following the precipitation, forecasts suggest a warm-up, with temperatures climbing into the 80s by mid-week.

For those making plans for next weekend, an early warning system has already indicated a potential for heavy thunderstorms, suggesting that families should keep an eye on the weather as they plan future outings.

As families in Central Alabama prepare to celebrate Mother’s Day, they are reminded to take safety precautions and plan accordingly. While rain may pose a challenge, the community’s rich array of events offers plenty of opportunities to honor mothers and create lasting memories.
