A tragic incident occurred this past Friday afternoon when a motorcycle and a Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck collided at the intersection of 9th Avenue North and 14th Street North in Birmingham, Alabama. The collision resulted in the fatality of the motorcyclist.

The Incident

The collision took place just after 4:30 p.m. on June 28, 2024. The intersection, located in a popular area of the city, was busy at the time of the accident. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the bike collided with the pickup truck, leading to a crash that proved fatal for the motorcyclist.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the deceased motorcyclist as 30-year-old Johnny Lee Underwood of Hueytown.

The Investigation

The Bessemer Police Department confirmed they are investigating the incident. The current focus is to ascertain the circumstances leading up to the accident. The Avalanche driver is cooperating fully with the authorities.

“We still have many questions to answer and we need the public’s assistance. If you happened to be in the vicinity and saw anything, please get in touch with the Bessemer Police Department’s Traffic Case Investigators,” urged a representative of the department.

The Response

Birmingham city officials are urging drivers to exercise caution, especially during peak traffic hours.

“This tragedy underscores the importance of practicing safe driving habits. Motorists, motorcyclists, pedestrians, everyone needs to be more aware of their surroundings. Safety should always be our top priority on the roads,” said a senior official from the city’s transportation board.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the victim’s family and friends at this difficult time,” he added.
