News Summary

At UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, the Bryant quadruplets made history by being born 115 days premature, marking them as the most premature quadruplets ever recorded. Delivered within five minutes, the newborns faced significant medical challenges but were eventually discharged after months of intensive care. This remarkable event showcases advancements in neonatal medicine and highlights the resilience of the Bryant family throughout their journey.

Birmingham, Alabama — A remarkable milestone in neonatal medicine has been recorded at UAB Hospital where the Bryant quadruplets were born on May 31, 2024. Remarkably, they arrived 115 days premature, at a gestational age of 23 weeks and 4 days, making them the most premature quadruplets documented in history according to Guinness World Records. This feat surpasses a previous record that was established in 1997.

The birth of the quadruplets—Lainey, Kali, Lennon, and Koen—took place within a span of just five minutes. Lainey was the first to be born at 2:15 a.m., followed closely by Kali at 2:16 a.m., Lennon at 2:17 a.m., and Koen at 2:20 a.m. Upon delivery, all four infants were immediately transferred to the Level IV UAB Regional Newborn Intensive Care Unit, a facility equipped to handle the most medically complex cases.

UAB assembled a dedicated team of 30 maternal-fetal and neonatology experts to perform an emergency cesarean delivery. The hospital implemented its Golden Week protocols aimed at minimizing complications during one of the most critical periods of the babies’ lives. These measures are essential as premature infants often face numerous severe complications, including brain bleeds, chronic lung disease, bowel injury, infections, and sepsis.

Each of the quadruplets, weighing between 1 lb 4.4 oz and 1 lb 6.8 oz at birth, required various forms of ventilation, medications, and multiple central lines to address their specific medical challenges. As they fought to gain stability, the Bryant family experienced a rollercoaster of emotions, facing numerous close calls where they feared for the lives of their newborns.

In November 2024, after months of intensive care, the quadruplets were stable enough to be moved to the UAB Continuing Care Nursery. After further progress, the family received joyful news in December when all four babies were discharged from the hospital, just in time for Christmas celebrations.

As the first birthday of the quadruplets approached in May 2025, each child displayed significant progress. While Koen and Lainey still required a nasal cannula due to ongoing medical needs, Lennon utilized a G tube for supplemental feeding. The family continues to follow up with the UAB Newborn Follow-Up Clinic and Children’s of Alabama to monitor ongoing development and health assessments.

Dr. Ayodeji Sanusi highlighted the exceptional care provided by UAB, which played a pivotal role in this record-setting event. The Bryant family expressed profound gratitude for the unwavering support from family, friends, and the dedicated medical team throughout this arduous journey.

The birth of the Bryant quadruplets serves not only as a testament to medical advancements but also as an inspiring story of resilience and hope for families facing similar challenges. As they continue to grow and thrive, the Bryants look forward to what the future holds for their remarkable children.
