Birmingham, AL – Spain Park High School’s boys golf team achieved a commendable second place finish at the Class 6A state golf tournament held at RTJ Oxmoor Valley’s Ridge Course on May 13, 2025. The Jaguars finished the tournament with a two-day total of 580, ending the competition at 4-over par, trailing behind champions Homewood, who secured their first place with a total of 562.

In a strong showing on the first day, Spain Park started the event with a team score of 287, which placed them just two strokes behind the leaders, Homewood. Junior Chase Kyes was particularly impressive, leading the team with a bogey-free round of 66. His performance set a solid foundation for the Jaguars, supported by Adam Russell’s score of 70 and Luke Philley, who carded a 75. Rocco Saia contributed a score of 76, while Landon Crane’s score of 80 did not count towards the team total.

The second day saw Spain Park’s performance slightly dip, as the team posted a score of 293. However, Kyes continued to shine, again posting a round of 66. Russell added a 72, Philley a 73, while Crane’s score of 82 was included in the performance total. Saia’s score of 83 was not included on the second day’s total. Kyes’ consistent play throughout the two days earned him the prestigious title of low medalist, with an impressive two-day total score of 132, finishing at 12-under par overall.

Adam Russell completed the tournament with a combined total of 142, while Luke Philley concluded with a score of 148. Despite the strong individual performances, Spain Park was unable to close the gap with Homewood, who increased their lead to a significant 18 strokes following a remarkable second-day score of 277.

Athens finished in third place in the Class 6A division, posting a total score of 586, while Spanish Fort secured fourth with a total of 592. The competition also featured notable performances from the Class 7A division, where Hoover’s boys golf team claimed third place with a total score of 589. Hoover opened the tournament with a score of 292, bolstered by Grayden Robinson’s round of 71. Cameron Rockett added a score of 73, with Jacob Lee and Tyler Stephens each contributing rounds of 74.

In the second round, Hoover recorded a score of 297, with Jacob Lee leading the team with an even-par 72, followed by Tyler Stephens’ 73. Robinson finished the tournament with a two-day total score of 145. The state champions in Class 7A, Vestavia Hills, finished with a total score of 551 at 25-under par, while UMS-Wright took the runner-up position in the same division with a combined score of 583.

Throughout the event, an impressive 23 boys’ golfers finished under par, alongside six girls who also achieved this feat. In a unique aspect for the Vestavia Hills golf team, their housing arrangement was inspired by a visit to a senior living facility prior to the tournament, showcasing a commitment to community engagement.
