Exciting News for Birmingham: UAB Athletics Hall of Fame Welcomes Five New Members!

Birmingham, Alabama, is brimming with excitement as the UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) Department of Athletics announces the newest class of inductees into the UAB Athletics Hall of Fame. The big event is set to take place on November 1, and it’s bringing together a stellar lineup of talented individuals who have made significant contributions to the UAB sports community.

Meet the Class of 2024

This year’s inductees include Drew Ferguson, Izell Reese, Frank Schaffner, Sam Serley, and Marla Townsend. Together, they form what is officially known as the Class of 2024. This induction will be the seventh class to join the Hall of Fame, bringing the total membership to an impressive 33 members.

A Pioneer in Athletic Training

Let’s start with Drew Ferguson, who holds a special place in UAB’s history. Having served as the very first head athletic trainer and director of sports medicine for UAB athletics, Ferguson was a key figure working alongside another Hall of Fame member, Gene Bartow. With over 40 years of service attributed to UAB, Ferguson is not only recognized for his professional skills but also for his pivotal role in founding what we now know as Children’s of Alabama Sports Medicine.

From College to the NFL

Next up is Izell Reese, who made a name for himself as a standout football player for the UAB Blazers from 1994 to 1997. As the second UAB player chosen in the NFL Draft, Reese has a notable legacy, standing third in the school’s history for solo tackles. The Dallas Cowboys picked him up in the sixth round, and he played in a total of 94 NFL games over seven seasons, naturally with the Cowboys along with the Denver Broncos and the Buffalo Bills.

A Tennis Trailblazer

Then we have Frank Schaffner, the first-ever All-American in UAB’s history during his time with the men’s tennis team (1991-1994). Schaffner’s game was no joke as he ranked as high as No. 7 nationally in singles, demonstrating his knack for hard work and dedication on the court. His achievement as the Great Midwest Conference Player of the Year is still remembered fondly.

Volleyball Excellence

Don’t forget about Sam Serley, who shined bright for the UAB volleyball team between 2009 and 2012. She currently stands as the school’s career leader with an astounding 564 blocks. Serley’s accolades include being a three-time All-Conference USA selection alongside three AVCA All-American recognitions. Talk about making an impact!

A Transformational Coach

Last but certainly not least, Marla Townsend took the helm as UAB’s first softball coach in 2000 and led the program for an impressive 19 seasons. Under her leadership, the Blazers reached the NCAA tournament five times in a row from 2010 through 2014, with a remarkable Super Regional appearance in 2013. Her accolades are highlighted by her three-time recognition as the Conference USA Coach of the Year.

The Big Night

The induction ceremony is all set for 7 p.m. CST on November 1, taking place at The Florentine in Birmingham. Tickets for this special event are available for purchase online, and it promises to be an emotional night filled with shared memories and celebration of these talented individuals who have left their mark on UAB Athletics.

As Birmingham gears up for this remarkable induction night, the pride of UAB’s past athletes continues to shine brightly. This is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of winning spirits, inspiring stories, and the legacy of UAB athletics that continue to resonate within the community.
