Vestavia Hills Boys Golf Team Claims Sixth State Championship with Record Performance

Vestavia Hills, AL — The boys golf team from Vestavia Hills High School won the Class 7A title at the AHSAA Golf State Championship, held on May 13-14, 2025. With a total score of 551, the team finished an impressive 25-under-par, marking a record-setting achievement at RTJ Oxmoor Valley’s Ridge Course in Birmingham, Alabama.

On the first day of the tournament, the Rebels set a strong tone by shooting a score of 10-under 278. Senior Clark Browne led his team with a stellar score of 68, while both Gus Darnall and Andrew Davis contributed significantly with rounds of 69. Additionally, Michael Dillon rounded out the scoring for the team with a 72. Although Seve Winebrenner shot a 75, his score did not factor into the overall total.

On the second day, the Vestavia Hills team raised the bar even higher, carding a remarkable 273 for a 15-under score. Gus Darnall, who demonstrated exceptional performance, posted a 67. Andrew Davis followed with a 68, while both Clark Browne and Michael Dillon recorded scores of 69. Once again, Winebrenner’s contribution of 75 was excluded from the final tally.

Darnall’s overall score of 136 earned him second place individually in the competition, while Browne and Davis tied for third with totals of 137. The Rebels’ performance not only secured the title but also showcased their depth and teamwork throughout the tournament.

In terms of overall standings, UMS-Wright finished as the runner-up with a total score of 583, followed by Hoover in third place with a score of 589. This championship title marks the sixth overall state title for Vestavia Hills, reinforcing its status as a dominant force in high school golf.

Recent Championship History

The boys golf team from Vestavia Hills has established a formidable presence in recent years, having previously won three consecutive state titles from 2021 to 2023. The team’s success this year signifies their ability to maintain excellence, despite the departure of previous team members, with senior Michael Dillon representing the only class of 2025 participant.

Fresh Perspective and Team Bonding

The team attributes part of their success to a visit they made to Morningside of Vestavia Hills, a senior living facility, prior to the tournament. This visit provided the players with a fresh perspective, fostering a sense of camaraderie and focus as they prepared for the competition.

Looking Ahead

As the only senior on the team, Michael Dillon plans to continue his golf career at Central Alabama Community College, marking the end of his high school golf journey on a high note. The team’s future looks promising, with a strong foundation laid by their recent accomplishments and the continued growth of their underclassmen.

The Vestavia Hills boys golf team has proven once again that they are a powerhouse in Alabama high school athletics. With their record-setting performance and strong team dynamics, they are poised to remain competitive for years to come.
