BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Magic City Classic Week gets underway Sunday in Birmingham, with a lineup of mostly free concerts, church music and street festivals leading up to Saturday’s game between Alabama State and Alabama A&M at Legion Field.
The week opens Sunday with a free concert inside Legion Field headlined by rapper Boosie, part of the city’s Safe Summer Series. Local acts take the stage at 4 p.m. Leave the coolers and lawn chairs at home, and bring only clear bags into the stadium.
On Wednesday, the 15th annual Battle of the Choirs moves the rivalry into the sanctuary at Sardis Missionary Baptist Church, located at 1615 4th Court West. The historic Fourth Avenue District then hosts the Taste of Fourth Avenue Jazz Festival, a no-cost evening of live jazz, food and local vendors with a performance from members of Birmingham Youth and Young Adult Fellowship Choir.
The biggest crowd of the week could come Thursday, Oct. 29, when Summer Walker, Tank and Avery Wilson headline the free Magic City Classic Tailgate Festival at the Birmingham Race Course, 1000 John Rogers Drive. Gates open at 3 p.m., a pre-show starts at 5 and the main show begins at 6. Organizers say free rides to the race course will be offered.
Friday shifts to City Walk, with hot rods, food trucks, live music, trunk-or-treat fun for families and a car competition paying out a share of $5,000 in prizes. Rapper Young Dro is also on the bill.
Game day starts at 8 a.m. Saturday with the Magic City Classic Parade, stepping off from 18th Street North and 7th Avenue North with marching bands, dance teams and community groups. A pregame tailgate party runs between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the west side of Legion Field, and the Bulldogs and Hornets kick off the 85th Classic at 2:30 p.m., with the two schools’ bands squaring off at halftime.
