FULTONDALE, Ala. — A person was found dead early Saturday after fire tore through a two-story house off Sayers Road in Fultondale, just north of Birmingham.
Fultondale Fire & Rescue got the call at 11:54 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6. When crews pulled up in the Dave Cliff Forest neighborhood, the house was heavily involved, and firefighters ran several hoselines while they searched inside.
They had the flames under control by about 12:41 a.m. Saturday, and that is when the occupant was found inside. The victim has not been named. The Jefferson County Coroner will release the name once family members have been told.
From the first call to the moment the fire was declared under control took about 47 minutes. Crews spent much of that time fighting heavy fire on two floors while also checking rooms for anyone trapped inside, a slow and dangerous job in a home already fully involved.
Fultondale sits in Jefferson County along Interstate 65, a few miles north of downtown Birmingham, and the Dave Cliff Forest neighborhood is a residential area reached from Sayers Road. Officials had not released any details Saturday about who lived in the home or whether anyone else was inside when the fire broke out.
Fire marshals from Fultondale and the state, along with Fultondale police, are working to learn where and how the fire started. Gardendale firefighters, Regional Paramedical Services, Alabama Power and Fultondale Gas also came out to the scene.
Investigators have not said what caused the fire. The Fultondale Fire Marshal’s Office and the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office will look at both the cause and the point of origin, a review that can take days or weeks to finish.
