Birmingham Unveils New Senior Housing in Southtown Development

Modern senior housing facility in Birmingham

News Summary

Birmingham’s Southside is abuzz with the opening of Southtown Senior, a dedicated housing facility for seniors, part of the expansive Edgehill at Southtown project. Featuring 143 modern apartments, this community-centric development emphasizes comfort and engagement, catering to the city’s aging population. With a blend of amenities and a nod to Birmingham’s history, Southtown Senior represents a significant investment in senior living and is set to foster a vibrant community atmosphere.

Birmingham Welcomes New Senior Housing in Southtown Development

Birmingham’s Southside is buzzing with excitement as the official ribbon was cut on the latest addition to the community — Southtown Senior, a vibrant new residential building thoughtfully designed for seniors. This newly opened facility is part of the larger mixed-use development known as Edgehill at Southtown, which is making waves across the 26-acre campus that was once home to the Southtown Court public housing project.

A Glimpse Back in Time

It’s interesting to note that the Southtown Court building was constructed way back in 1941 but unfortunately fell into disrepair over the years. After the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District approved plans for a fresh start about six years ago, things began to change. The demolition of Southtown Court kicked off in 2021, making way for something new and exciting that reflects the community’s spirit and needs.

Building New Dreams

The first building completed in this ambitious redevelopment project, Southtown Family, opened its doors back on September 20, welcoming new residents who made the move in just a few weeks later on October 1. Now, Southtown Senior is stepping into the limelight, bringing with it 143 modern one- and two-bedroom apartments, all tailored for those aged 62 and older. The building, covering an impressive 158,384 square feet, is outfitted to provide both comfort and convenience for its residents.

Community-Centric Features

One of the standout features of Southtown Senior is its array of community amenities that foster an engaging living environment. Residents can look forward to a dedicated fitness center to stay active, a cozy community room for gatherings and activities, as well as a business center for those who need to stay connected in a professional sense. As of now, an impressive 131 applicants are eagerly waiting to move in, indicating that this new development is closing in on becoming fully occupied!

A Nod to History

The interior of Southtown Senior shines a light on Birmingham’s rich history, with walls adorned with images of steelworkers and civil rights leaders. Designed by M One Design Group, these accents provide a sense of pride and connection to the city’s past, making the space not only a place to live, but also a community to cherish.

An Investment in the Future

This entire project represents a significant investment, with nearly $60 million funneled into this mixed-use redevelopment plan. The Housing Authority of the Birmingham District plays a pivotal role in this initiative, serving as Alabama’s largest provider of public housing and catering to around 23,000 residents, a whopping 80% of whom are seniors.

Looking Ahead

But that’s not all! Developers have their eyes set on the future and are working on plans for additional commercial developments in the area. Expect to see a blend of retailers, medical offices, hotels, and even restaurants coming soon, which will undoubtedly enhance the community feel of Edgehill at Southtown.

A Community for Active Living

Feedback from senior residents has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing their eagerness for an active lifestyle supported by engaging programs. The mission at hand is clear: to ensure that every resident in Birmingham has access to quality and affordable housing that meets their needs.

With Southtown Senior now open and thriving, it’s evident that Birmingham’s Southside is not just building homes; it’s building a community that honors the past while looking forward to a bright future.
