Birmingham – Central Alabama Water (CAW) has successfully completed repairs on two significant water main breaks, one in Mountain Brook and another in Ensley, restoring service to affected residents and businesses. The main break on 21st Avenue South in Mountain Brook was reported around 11:45 a.m. on Thursday, July 10, 2025, and repairs were finalized by 10:25 p.m. the same day.

The broken water main in Mountain Brook was identified as a 6-inch line located near Cahaba Road. During the repair process, CAW also discovered two additional leaks, which were addressed. Residents affected by the main break were advised to run cold water from their faucets for five minutes to clear their plumbing systems of any air or discolored water.

Meanwhile, crews responded to a separate water main break in Ensley that occurred around 4:30 a.m. on the same day, impacting water pressure for numerous residents and several businesses in the area. The repair work in Ensley was completed shortly after 5:00 p.m. with full service restoration anticipated within the hour. The Ensley break involved a substantial 24-inch water line and required crews to isolate the issue, providing water to most residents by noon. However, some customers in the Tuxedo-Junction Heights community between 22nd and 30th Street remained without water until repairs were finalized.

The hole created by the Ensley break is scheduled to be filled with gravel by Wednesday evening. Streets will also be cleaned, and sand will be spread out to protect against ice until crews can return in a few days to complete paving when weather conditions improve.

The impact of the water outages was felt by local businesses, including a Dollar General, whose manager reported challenges due to the low availability of water affecting daily operations. CAW has been proactive in addressing such issues by investing significantly in pipeline replacement projects over the last five years, replacing approximately 15 to 17 miles of pipe annually. This investment aims to reduce the frequency of water main breaks and improve overall service reliability.

In light of these recent incidents, residents are reminded to reach out to Central Alabama Water with any questions or concerns by calling 205-244-4000. As the utility continues to work diligently on infrastructure improvements, affected customers can expect timely communication regarding service restorations and procedures to ensure water quality.
