A shooting at the Woodlawn High School alumni picnic in Birmingham resulted in a serious injury to an innocent bystander and damage to several vehicles. The incident occurred during an argument between two groups that escalated into gunfire, prompting an urgent police investigation. No suspects are currently in custody, and authorities are appealing for witnesses to come forward. This troubling event raises concerns about public safety at community gatherings and reflects ongoing issues of gun violence.

Birmingham — A shooting at Woodlawn High School’s alumni picnic on July 12 left a woman seriously injured and damaged at least seven vehicles in the parking lot. The Birmingham Police Department reported that the incident took place around 7 p.m. during a festive gathering held to celebrate the school’s alumni.

The altercation occurred in the back parking lot of the high school, located on First Avenue North. According to the police, two groups of men, both present at the event, became embroiled in an argument that escalated quickly into gunfire. Officer Truman Fitzgerald indicated that the dispute started with one individual from each group, eventually leading one of the men to retrieve a firearm from a vehicle.

As multiple shots rang out, the Shot Spotter gunfire detection system recorded at least double-digit rounds fired during the chaotic incident. It has been confirmed that the injured woman was an innocent bystander and was not involved in the altercation. She was transported to UAB Hospital with serious injuries, although her current medical condition remains unclear.

In addition to the injury caused by the gunfire, investigators reported that approximately seven vehicles parked in the lot were hit during the shooting. Thankfully, no other serious injuries have been noted among attendees of the event, which was attended by many members of the local community.

As the investigation continues, police are actively searching for more than one individual believed to be involved in the shootout. At this time, no suspects are in custody. The Birmingham Police Department’s Felony Assault Unit is urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. Individuals can contact the unit at 205-254-1764 or reach out to Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777. Witnesses providing information that leads to an arrest may be eligible for cash rewards of up to $5,000.

This event has raised significant concerns about public safety, particularly since it was held in a crowded area during a seemingly celebratory occasion. The community remains on edge following the incident, highlighting ongoing issues regarding gun violence and the need for greater security measures in public gatherings.

The July 12 picnic was intended as a time for reflection and reconnection among alumni, and the eruption of violence has sent shockwaves through the community, causing many to question the safety protocols in place at such gatherings. As police continue their investigation, they are focusing on gathering witness accounts and seeking clarity on the series of events that led to the dangerous escalation of what should have been a joyous reunion.

This incident is part of a larger trend of gun violence affecting cities across the country, and the Birmingham Police are emphasizing the importance of community involvement in reporting suspicious activities to help prevent future violence. The department encourages all residents to engage with law enforcement to foster a safer environment for all.
